Yellow Fever in Nigeria: 23 Deaths and 169 Infected as Yellow Fever to Gombe, Katsina, Borno, and Kano state
Following the recent outbreak of yellow fever in Bauchi
States, Nigeria, the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported
that since yellow fever was first reported on 29th August 2019
concerning a case of someone from Kano who had earlier visited the games
reserve in Yankari, Alkaleri LGA, Bauchi State in August 2019.
The suspected cases reported so far is 169. On Sunday,
September 15, 2019, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said Nigeria
was responding well to the challenge posed to people who have either visited or
residents of Alkaleri LGA (Bauchi) from 1st August 2019 in the
Northeastern state.
Further, the center said, the cases suspected and
confirmed in Kano, Borno, Gombe, and Katsina states have an epidemiological
link to Bauchi state.
The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) gave the
breakdown as follows; 169 suspected cases, 10 positive incidents (1gM positive
on serology), 15 confirmed cases by RT-PCR, 23 deaths, and spread across five
states in Nigeria.
The Director-General of the Center, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu
that the National yellow fever technical working group (TWG) activated the
National Incident Management System (IMS) to manage and see to the response
activities on Thursday, 5th September 2019.

All the samples collected have been transferred to the Institut
Pasteur Dakar (IP Dakar), Senegal, for further analysis.
Ihekweazu further stated that the RT-PCR had been used to
confirm 15 cases in Nigeria laboratories, NCDC National reference laboratory;
Gaduwa confirmed 14 cases while Lagos university teaching hospital confirmed a
case
So far, 23 deaths had been recorded among the suspected
cases – Katsina (13), Kano (1), Bauchi (9) with 13.6% case fatality rate (CFR).
The Director-General finally confirmed that the outbreak
response activities were managed by a multi-agency National yellow fever
emergency operation center coordinated at the NCDC and the National Rapid
Response Team (RRT). Interventions have so far been given to Bauchi state.
