The nutritional benefits of honey cannot be overemphasized. Its benefits are so numerous and useful for all ages except for children under 12 months because their immune system is unable to fight the “botulinum spores” contained in honey.

What is honey? Honey is a golden-like, sweet liquid that can be gotten from the secretions of insects like honeydew or the sugary secretion from plants. 


The popular honey is that which is produced by honey bees. Bees store honey in wax structures known as honeycomb.

Honey is known widely for its numerous benefits. Although in ancient times, different persons use it to signify one good thing or the other especially in the Yoruba culture.

1.      Honey contains antioxidants
Research showed that antioxidants help to reduce the risk of stroke and other heart-related diseases. Honey contains antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, therefore, preventing them from causing damage.

 Note: free radicals are chemicals that can cause damage to cells. The antioxidants present in honey include phenolic and organic acids. It also helps in the improvement of the eyes and minimizes the occurrence of cancer. Therefore, patients already diagnosed with cancer should consult their medical expert before consuming honey.

2.      Lowers blood pressure
As a result of the antioxidants present in honey, it can help to moderately lower the blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure will result in heart disease but the consumption of honey can help to minimize its effects.

3.      Healing for burns and wounds
Honey contains antibacterial properties and also acidic pH which helps to improve the healing compound necessary for a wound. Over the years, wound –care professionals have been known to include medical-grade honey to heal chronic wounds.

In addition, the sugar present in honey has the ability to extracting water out of damaged tissues thereby preventing swelling and aids the flow of lymph to hasten the healing of the wounds.

A teaspoon of honey mixed with lemon and warm water will help to clear off mucus from the airway. Interestingly, honey reduces cough at night thereby providing sound sleep.
