MonkeyPox breaks out in Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and some other states.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) yesterday confirmed the outbreak of five fresh cases of MonkeyPox in Lagos, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States respectively.

The outbreak of MonkeyPox is resurfacing about 2years after the index case was first announced in Nigeria. In the latest outbreak, Lagos state has recorded 3 cases, while Akwa Ibom and Rivers have one each.

Going by the latest report on MonkeyPox and Lasser fever published yesterday by the NCDC, for the reporting month of September 2019, 15 new suspected cases of MonkeyPox were reported in 5 states – Lagos (5), Akwa Ibom (3), Rivers (2), Imo (2), Zamfara (1), Delta (1), and the Federal capital territory (FCT) (1).

Out of the 15 suspected cases, 5 were confirmed positive for MonkeyPox and spread across 3 states. 5 tested positive for chickenpox, while the rest are for further examination. No casualty was reported in the month under review.

The NCDC said 81 suspected cases had so far been reported in 2019, out of which 39 confirmed cases were reported in 9 states (Enugu, Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River, Anambra, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Oyo state) while one death was recorded.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also reported that since the outbreak in September 2017, 9 deaths from 176 confirmed cases were recorded in 18 states (Anambra, Edo, Plateau, Benue, Nassarawa, Enugu, Ekiti, Abia, Oyo, Bauchi, FCT, Lagos, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa state).

In tackling this challenge, the CEO of NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu announced that the center through the MonkeyPox Technical Working Group is managing the national response and control in partnership with states and other partners. Besides, the CEO said the outbreak response support is given to states for MonkeyPox, especially the high-risk states.

Ihekweazu also said animal surveillance is currently coordinated in Lagos while reports of the same exercise in 4 states (Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers) are being expected.

The center reported that 93% of all the confirmed cases emanated from Edo (38%), Ondo (30%), Bauchi (7%), Ebonyi (7%), Taraba (6%), and Plateau (5%)

Currently, 12 patients are being managed at 2 different treatment centers in Nigeria; the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) in Edo State is with 11 patients while 1 patient is at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo (Ondo State).

The report for week 40 shows that no new healthcare personnel was affected, and a total of 19 health workers have been infected since the outbreak of the disease in 10 States Edo (6), Ondo (4), Ebonyi (2), Enugu (1), Bauchi (1), Rivers (1), Benue (1), Plateau (1), Delta (1), Kebbi (1), and 2 deaths recorded in Edo and Enugu.
